We’ve had an epidemic recently in the major leagues of young fans being given baseballs only to throw them back onto the field, and it happened again Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park as the Houston Astros hosted the San Diego Padres.
In the top of the second inning, Padres batter Yonder Alonso hit the foul ball into the stands on the third base side. An older fan came up with the ball and was nice enough to give the ball to the boy, who promptly threw it back onto the field, to the dismay of the other fans nearby.
This follows recent incidents such as the young Rays fan who threw away given to him by his dad and the young Yankees fan in Kansas City who threw a ball away that was handed to him by manager Joe Girardi.
Are kids getting confused by watching fans throw home run balls hit by opposing players back onto the field? Maybe, but for whatever reason, the kids obviously are getting the wrong message, so it’s our job to straighten them out.
Parents, please help your kids to understand: If someone gives them a baseball, they should keep it!
