Guess the only team in the league that has beat the Miami Heat, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Â and Brooklyn Nets this season.
I guarantee that you didn’t guess the 17-37 Washington Wizards. But the Wizards have actually defeated the six of the above teams at least once this season.  Six of the best eight teams in the league have fallen victim to the Wizards. And these results should not be so surprising.
Much to every fans surprise the Wizards have been playing incredibly good defense since young stud point guard John Wall returned on January 12, 2013, which has elevated their overall play.
Since Wall’s return the Wizards have been playing ferocious defense and statistically are on of the best defensive teams in the league. Defensive rating is a statistic that measures the amount of points a team gives up per 100 possessions and the Wizards would give up 97.2 points per 100 possessions which is second lowest defensive rating just behind the Indiana Pacers.
Opponents are only shooting 43.3% against the Wizards since Wall’s return which puts them in the top five in lowest opponent shooting percentage. The Wizards are holding opponents to 31.7% from three which is third best in this time period.
The statistics go on and on. The Wizards are top five in steals forced and rebounds collected, top ten in turnovers forced, and number one in defensive rebounds collected.
The wins against the Heat, Knicks, Thunder, Clippers, Nuggets, and Nets all have occurred since Wall returned from injury and would not have been possible without him.
But even with these outstanding defensive numbers, the Wizards still stink. They have the third lowest winning percentage in the NBA and are the worst offensive team in the league. The Wizards are 30th out of 30 in points per game, consistently struggling to score.
Even though this season is a wash for the Wizards, next season if their roster stays healthy and they acquire or find a way to create more offensive the Wizards could make the playoffs next season.
This season is all but over for the Wiz, but who knows, maybe when the Lakers need a win down the home stretch the Wizards will be there opponent and play giant killer one more time this season.
