Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas missed the bag when rounding first base on a hit that was mishandled by Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen during Saturday night’s game at PNC Park. Instead of what should have been extra bases, Moustakas had to settle for a single.
It happened in the top of the fifth inning when Moustakas had a base hit to right center field. The ball took a tricky hop on McCutchen and bounced underneath his glove, but while McCutchen chased the ball to the outfield wall, Moustakas missed the bag at first base. When Moustakas realized he missed the bag and had to go back to first to tag the bag, it took away his shot at an extra base hit.
McCutchen may have gotten fooled by the tricky hop, but there’s no excuse for a major league ballplayer like Moustakas to make a fundamental mistake like this when running the basepaths.
