The debate of RG3 vs Luck has been hot ever since RG3 destroyed at the combine and scout’s began to really wonder. Could RG3 be a better pick than Andrew Luck? Let’s break it down.
Passing:
Luck- Andrew was a fantastic thrower in college completing an incredible 71.3% of his throws last season. Luck has perfect mechanics and has the best footwork any scout has a player out of college have since…. the man he is replacing, Peyton Manning. Even Manning didn’t throw for over 70% at UT. Given of course the SEC is clearly the better conference.
RG3- Robert Griffin III did Luck one better at 72.4%. However, Griffin played in the pass happy Big 12 which led to both more completions and more in-completions which makes the feat even better! RG3 though does not pass well out of the pocket. He tends to scramble and throw more on the run. Also, RG3 is no where near Luck’s level of near perfection for his throwing mechanics.
Decision: Luck
Mobility:
Luck- LET ME NOTE: Luck had David DeCastro and Jonathan Martin to help block for him who are two very highly touted O-line prospects. So he didn’t have to run much. So: notice how I wrote mobility instead of rushing ability. This is because if your not Michael Vick your not looking to run every play (No Cam Newton and Josh Freeman don’t look to run every play.). Luck’s mobility is average, but, is one of the most accurate throwers on the move in college football. Luck could also probably pick up a first down when scrambling on 3rd and maybe 6.
RG3- This man can fly. He ran a 4.41 at the combine. Best of any QB at the combine and even better then most Wide Receivers and Running Backs! Griffin on the run was one of the best throwers in the college game. RG3 did most of his throwing on the run in college which is both a pro and con for NFL scouts.
Decision: RG3
Receiving:
Just kidding.
NFL Readiness:
Luck- Andrew was given the freedom to audible and switch blocking at the line and was clearly successful in doing so. Many people say that Luck audibles and reads plays in a ‘Manning-esque’ fashion. His ability mixed with his brains on the field make him so special.
RG3- Robert wasn’t given the same freedom as Luck. Not because Art Briles didn’t want him to. It was because RG3 wasn’t ready for it. He wasn’t really allowed to do much at the offensive line except snap the ball and let his play do the talking.
Decision: Clearly, Luck
Potential:
Luck- Some unpopular scouts have said that Luck has peaked and won’t become much better than he is now. Some say the greatness has just begun. If Luck really, really works on his game he can become elite very quickly. The only problem is he will be on the Colts which is where his inner-Peyton must shine and lead them to the playoffs in one of his first 4 or 5 seasons.
RG3- I believe RG3 is in a better position than Luck at the moment. Although the Redskins are not good by any means, they still have loads of potential and weapons to help RG3. The only thing they don’t have is a QB who can play while RG3 can sit behind while he experiences his growing pains. RG3 is a new type of quarterback who isn’t Michael Vick but he isn’t Aaron Rodgers either. He can be something in between which will be an MVP but maybe not a Superbowl champion. But RG3′s lowest could be in the area of bust status…
Decision: Tie
Overall: Luck’s greatness won’t be enough to help the Colts win. He made succeed individually but not in the wins and loss column. RG3 will be put into a perfect system and should thrive immediately.
Who wins more games? RG3
Who will win more MVPs? RG3. Have to win games before you win an MVP.
Who will win the Superbowl first/ more Superbowl’s? RG3
Winner: RG3
